This chapter covers Direction Cosines, Direction Ratios, Equations of Lines in Vector & Cartesian form, Angle between Lines, Skew Lines, and Shortest Distance โ concepts directly appearing in AAI ATC written papers.
A directed line L making angles ฮฑ, ฮฒ, ฮณ with the positive x, y, z axes respectively has direction cosines: l = cos ฮฑ, m = cos ฮฒ, n = cos ฮณ.
Direction Ratios (a, b, c): Any three numbers proportional to l, m, n.
DC's of line through P(xโ,yโ,zโ) and Q(xโ,yโ,zโ):
DC's of coordinate axes: x-axis โ (1,0,0) | y-axis โ (0,1,0) | z-axis โ (0,0,1)
Collinearity Test: If DR's of AB and BC are proportional, then A, B, C are collinear.
Example: DR's โ18, 12, โ4 โ DC's are: โ18/โ(324+144+16) = โ18/22 = โ9/11, 12/22 = 6/11, โ4/22 = โ2/11
Q1. A line makes angles 90ยฐ, 60ยฐ, 30ยฐ with x, y, z axes. Its direction cosines are:
Q2. The direction cosines of the line joining P(โ2,4,โ5) and Q(1,2,3) are (PQ = โ77):
Q3. A line makes equal angles with all three coordinate axes. The value of each direction cosine is:
A line in 3D space is uniquely determined either by (i) a point and a direction, or (ii) two points. There are two forms: Vector form and Cartesian form.
where (xโ,yโ,zโ) is the point and (a,b,c) are direction ratios of bฬ.
Example: Line through (5,2,โ4) parallel to 3รฎ+2ฤตโ8kฬ:
Q1. The Cartesian equation of the line through (1,2,3) parallel to vector 3รฎ+2ฤตโ2kฬ is:
Q2. Convert (xโ5)/3 = (y+4)/7 = (zโ6)/2 to vector form. The equation is:
Q3. The parametric equations of the line rฬ = (รฎ+2ฤต) + ฮป(3รฎโฤต+2kฬ) are:
The acute angle ฮธ between two lines can be found using their direction ratios or direction vectors.
Perpendicular: aโaโ + bโbโ + cโcโ = 0
Parallel: aโ/aโ = bโ/bโ = cโ/cโ
Example: Lines with DR's (3,5,4) and (1,1,2):
Q1. The condition for two lines with DR's (aโ,bโ,cโ) and (aโ,bโ,cโ) to be perpendicular is:
Q2. The angle between lines rฬ = (3รฎ+2ฤตโ4kฬ)+ฮป(รฎ+2ฤต+2kฬ) and rฬ = (5รฎโ2ฤต)+ฮผ(3รฎ+2ฤต+6kฬ) is:
Q3. Find p if lines (1โx)/3 = (7yโ14)/2p = (zโ3)/2 and (7โ7x)/3p = (yโ5)/1 = (6โz)/5 are at right angles:
Skew lines are lines in space that are neither parallel nor intersecting. They lie in different planes. The shortest distance between them is the perpendicular segment joining the two lines.
For lines rฬ = ฤโ + ฮปbฬโ and rฬ = ฤโ + ฮผbฬโ:
For lines (xโxโ)/aโ = (yโyโ)/bโ = (zโzโ)/cโ and (xโxโ)/aโ = (yโyโ)/bโ = (zโzโ)/cโ:
Example: Shortest distance between rฬ=(รฎ+ฤต)+ฮป(2รฎโฤต+kฬ) and rฬ=(2รฎ+ฤตโkฬ)+ฮผ(3รฎโ5ฤต+2kฬ):
Q1. For two lines to be coplanar (intersecting or parallel), which condition must hold?
Q2. The distance between parallel lines rฬ=(รฎ+2ฤตโ4kฬ)+ฮป(2รฎ+3ฤต+6kฬ) and rฬ=(3รฎ+3ฤตโ5kฬ)+ฮผ(2รฎ+3ฤต+6kฬ) is:
Q3. The shortest distance between lines (x+1)/7 = (y+1)/(โ6) = (z+1)/1 and (xโ3)/1 = (yโ5)/(โ2) = (zโ7)/1 is:
All key formulas in one place โ revise this before your exam!
| Concept | Formula |
|---|---|
| DC identity | lยฒ + mยฒ + nยฒ = 1 |
| DC from DR (a,b,c) | l=ยฑa/โ(aยฒ+bยฒ+cยฒ), m=ยฑb/โ(aยฒ+bยฒ+cยฒ), n=ยฑc/โ(aยฒ+bยฒ+cยฒ) |
| DC joining P,Q | (xโโxโ)/PQ, (yโโyโ)/PQ, (zโโzโ)/PQ |
| Line vector form | rฬ = ฤ + ฮปbฬ |
| Line Cartesian form | (xโxโ)/a = (yโyโ)/b = (zโzโ)/c |
| Angle between lines | cosฮธ = |bฬโยทbฬโ| / (|bฬโ||bฬโ|) |
| Perpendicular lines | aโaโ+bโbโ+cโcโ = 0 |
| Parallel lines | aโ/aโ = bโ/bโ = cโ/cโ |
| SD skew lines | |(bฬโรbฬโ)ยท(ฤโโฤโ)| / |bฬโรbฬโ| |
| Distance parallel lines | |bฬร(ฤโโฤโ)| / |bฬ| |
1. Always take the acute angle (use |cosฮธ| โ take the modulus).
2. If (bฬโรbฬโ)ยท(ฤโโฤโ) = 0, the lines are coplanar (not necessarily intersecting โ could be parallel if bฬโรbฬโ=0 too).
3. Direction ratios of a line can be scaled by any nonzero constant โ there are infinitely many sets but only one set of direction cosines (for a directed line).
4. Collinearity of points: check if DR's of any two segments formed are proportional.
Q1. The lines x/1 = y/2 = z/3 and (xโ1)/2 = (yโ2)/4 = (zโ3)/6 are:
Q2. The direction cosines of the x-axis are:
Q3. Which condition shows that lines through (1,โ1,2)โ(3,4,โ2) and (0,3,2)โ(3,5,6) are perpendicular?
