NCERT Class 12 ยท Complete Video Lesson + MCQ Practice
Chapter 4 โ Determinants is one of the highest-weightage topics in the AAI ATC written exam. Questions appear on evaluating 2ร2 and 3ร3 determinants, minors & cofactors, area of triangles, adjoint, inverse matrices, and solving 3-variable systems using the matrix method. Mastering this chapter is essential for a high score.
To every square matrix A = [aij] of order n, we associate a number (real or complex) called the determinant of A, denoted by |A| or det(A) or ฮ.
Only square matrices have determinants. |A| is read as "determinant of A", NOT "modulus of A".
|A| = |aโโ aโโ| = aโโยทaโโ โ aโโยทaโโ
|aโโ aโโ|
Example: |2 4| = 2(2) โ 4(โ1) = 4 + 4 = 8
|โ1 2|
Expanding along any row OR column always gives the same value of the determinant.

Add your diagram showing step-by-step expansion of 3ร3 determinant along Rโ
Tip for AAI ATC: Always expand along the row or column with the maximum number of zeros โ it saves calculation time!
If A = kB (square matrices of order n), then |A| = kโฟ|B|. For a 3ร3 matrix: |kA| = kยณ|A|.
The area of a triangle with vertices (xโ,yโ), (xโ,yโ) and (xโ,yโ) is given by:
Always take the absolute value since area is positive.
[ Image Space ]
Add a worked example diagram: triangle with vertices (3,8), (โ4,2), (5,1) with area calculation
Always take |determinant| โ area can never be negative.
If area is given, use both + and โ values of determinant.
Three points are collinear โบ Area of triangle = 0 โบ |det| = 0.
Line through (xโ,yโ) and (xโ,yโ): set the 3ร3 det with point (x,y) = 0.
AAI ATC Tip: Collinearity questions are very common. Three points A, B, C are collinear if and only if the determinant formed by their coordinates = 0.
Minor Mij: The determinant obtained by deleting the ith row and jth column of the matrix. Minor of order n matrix is a determinant of order (nโ1).
Cofactor Aij: Defined as Aij = (โ1)i+j Mij
Sign Pattern (โ1)^(i+j):
+ โ +
โ + โ

(i+j even โ +1, i+j odd โ โ1)

Add your diagram showing minor Mโโ of a 3ร3 matrix by crossing out Rโ and Cโ
Sum of products of elements of ANY row/column with their cofactors = |A|
Critical Rule: If elements of a row (or column) are multiplied with cofactors of a DIFFERENT row (or column), the sum = 0.
e.g. aโโAโโ + aโโAโโ + aโโAโโ = 0
The adjoint of a square matrix A = [aij]nรn is the transpose of the cofactor matrix [Aij]nรn. Denoted by adj A.
Find the cofactor Aij for every element aij of A.
Form the cofactor matrix [Aij].
Transpose the cofactor matrix โ this is adj A.
Swap diagonal elements, change signs of off-diagonal elements.
Theorem: Aยท(adj A) = (adj A)ยทA = |A|ยทI
Inverse Formula: Aโปยน = (1/|A|) ยท adj A, provided |A| โ 0
|adj A| = |A|nโ1, where n is the order of A. For 3ร3: |adj A| = |A|ยฒ

Add worked example: find adj A and Aโปยน for a given 3ร3 matrix with full steps
| Type | Condition | Inverse Exists? |
|---|---|---|
| Singular Matrix | |A| = 0 | โ No inverse |
| Non-Singular Matrix | |A| โ 0 | โ Inverse exists |
A system of linear equations aโx + bโy + cโz = dโ, aโx + bโy + cโz = dโ, aโx + bโy + cโz = dโ can be written as AX = B where:
Solution: X = AโปยนB (when |A| โ 0)
| |A| | (adj A)B | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| โ 0 | โ | โ Unique solution (Consistent) |
| = 0 | โ O | โ No solution (Inconsistent) |
| = 0 | = O | โ Infinite solutions OR no solution |

Add a solved 3-variable system: 3xโ2y+3z=8, 2x+yโz=1, 4xโ3y+2z=4 with full matrix solution
Write the system as AX = B, identify coefficient matrix A.
Calculate |A|. If |A| โ 0, inverse exists โ proceed.
Find cofactors โ adj A โ Aโปยน = (1/|A|) adj A.
Compute X = AโปยนB to get values of x, y, z.
AAI ATC Exam Tip: In word problems, first convert the given information into 3 equations. Set up AX = B and solve using Aโปยน. The matrix method is faster and more reliable for 3-variable systems.
|A| for 2ร2: aโโaโโ โ aโโaโโ. For 3ร3: expand along row/column with most zeros.
|kA| = kโฟ|A| for nรn matrix. So |3A|โโโ = 27|A|.
Area of triangle = (1/2)|det|. Collinear points โ det = 0.
Minor Mij: delete row i, col j. Cofactor Aij = (โ1)^(i+j) Mij.
adj A = transpose of cofactor matrix. Aโปยน = (1/|A|) adj A.
A(adj A) = |A|I. |adj A| = |A|^(nโ1).
Matrix method: AX = B โ X = AโปยนB (if |A| โ 0) = unique solution.
|A| = 0 and (adj A)B โ O โ inconsistent. |A| = 0 and (adj A)B = O โ may or may not be consistent.
