Formulas you will need

Key formulas i before e except after c: believe, achieve, receive, deceive
Doubled letters worth memorising: accommodation, occurrence, millennium, unnecessary, possession
supersede is the only common word ending in -sede
French loan words keep their original spelling: rendezvous, bourgeois, liaison, entrepreneur, bureau, questionnaire
How to use this worksheet. AAI favours French loan words — two of the three previous year questions here are exactly that, and they look wrong to an English eye by design. And in an INCORRECTLY-spelt question, look for the definite mistake rather than the option that merely looks unfamiliar.

Section C · Previous year questions and loan words

Straight from the AAI ATC papers

Ten questions. Three are real previous year questions.

Q21PYQ 2021 · Shift 3
Select the correctly spelt word.
Rendezvous is a French loan word and keeps its original spelling. Break it into three parts — ren-dez-vous — and the letters fall into place. Loan words such as this, bureau and liaison keep spellings that look wrong to an English eye, which is exactly why they are set.
Q22PYQ 2025 · Shift 1
Select the INCORRECTLY spelt word.
The correct spelling is bourgeois. Like rendezvous it is a French loan word, and once again the borrowed spelling is what the question is testing. The other three are correct, including unnecessary with its double n and double s.
Q23PYQ 2025 · Shift 2
Select the INCORRECTLY spelt word.
It should be supersede, which is the only common English word ending in -sede. Note that acknowledgment is acceptable without the middle e, so it is not the error here — a reminder to look for the definite mistake rather than the unfamiliar-looking word.
Q24
Select the correctly spelt word.
Supersede comes from the Latin sedere, to sit. It is the counterpart of the previous question.
Q25
Select the correctly spelt word.
Bourgeois is the correct masculine and general form.
Q26
Select the correctly spelt word.
Liaison keeps two i letters, one on each side of the a.
Q27
Select the correctly spelt word.
Questionnaire takes a double n, following the French pattern.
Q28
Select the correctly spelt word.
Entrepreneur is another French borrowing, and every wrong option here rearranges its vowels.
Q29
Select the correctly spelt word.
Guarantee begins gua-, like guard.
Q30
Select the correctly spelt word.
Acknowledge contains the whole word knowledge.
